How to become a minimalist?

“Minimalism” is term broadly used in this day and age. Some people may think that by painting your walls white and buying a succulent plant that that’s what minimalism is. But here at Urban Travel, Minimalism is the centre of our brand; we live and breathe it, from small office spaces, to minimal stitching on our handbags.

We would like to share with you what Minimalism means to us and how you can hop on the bandwagon in order to make a long-term change towards being a more organised and efficient person.

We understand that minimalism may not be sustainable for everyone, but we want to share how it has affected our brand and the little steps you can take.

What is a minimalist?

The definition of Minimal is “constituting a minimum” to be a minimalist is to do exactly that with your life. Living from the essentials, de-cluttering material objects and negative energies in life.

Why become one?

There are many reasons to become a minimalist but this is what’s most important to us;

Clarity- Condensing what’s important to you forces you to make some really important life decisions, whether it’s hoarding possessions or realising that there are negative people in your life that don’t wish the best for you. With clarity, comes clear life goals and objectives and less stress, as you understand what is important to you.

Money saving- ask yourself- do I really need to have a personal stock of office supplies if you only work from home once a week? Before buying something, ask yourself- does this really add value to my life, do I really NEED this? This is especially important with fashion decisions- I already have two pairs of great jeans, do I really need another pair because I have a little extra money this month?

Quick decision making- by having possessions that are absolutely essential, it allows you to make quick decisions everyday, for example by having a wardrobe with a minimalist classic style- you know everything you own can be worn together. No more last minute shopping on a Friday night because you have nothing to wear!

Sustainable for the environment- by becoming someone who values their essential possessions, it stops you buying irrelevant FAD products that give you short-term happiness. This all effects the environment- if more people become minimalists then that’s a lot less pressure on the supply/ demand chain.

How to become a Minimalist?

Write down a list of things that are currently making your life unhappy and use this as your daily motivation- when things get hard and you just want to buy something, or talk to someone to make you feel better for 10 minutes, remind yourself of why you have made this decision- to make yourself a happier person.

Clear out the non-essentials- Go through everything you own and think really hard about how it adds value to your life, if you haven’t used it or looked back at it in the last 6 months- throw/ donate it. If you have half empty shampoo bottles-don’t buy anymore until you have used the last drop.

Use your time more efficiently- the Internet is a wonderful place but many of us are guilty for spending hours a day online, sifting through lies from tabloids or stalking on Facebook. By limiting your time online it allows you to schedule more time with loved ones- even if it’s just a phone call. Set alarms; decide what time of night you stop replying to emails.

Tell us- where do you find your inspiration?

urbantravelbags - Tumblr blog | Tumgik (3)

What inspires you?

Here at Urban Travel HQ, we are surrounded by inspiration. It’s rare we turn a corner without seeing something that sparks our imagination. Our brand is based on being inspired by the human life, studying how different humans choose to live and the places they choose to live in.

The concept behind Urban Travel is to aid human life, creating handbags and products that can be everything a human may need in the modern age.

Whether that human is a Londoner, on the daily commute, or the long haul commuter, travelling from the countryside into the city everyday. Our bags are designed to be everything the modern human should need.

Equipped with key holders, iPad and laptop slots our expandable, versatile styles, are designed to make a human’s life easier, more efficient.

Both the city and the countryside inspire us, designing accessories for the fast pace of the city, but keeping in mind of our carbon footprint. This is why all of our handbags are manufactured in the UK. We use the highest quality materials, so your new handbag won’t need to be replaced for a long time.

In our modern society, there is so much noise, our brains are constantly working and accessing new information every second, always wanting new things- Urban Travel is designed to be timeless, our products are not FAD’s and will always stay in style. We don’t believe in fixing something that isn’t broken, replacing things that don’t need to be replaced, changing for the sake of change.

So what inspires us? YOU do. We make our accessories, for YOU with YOU at the centre of our design.

Interview with Isabel Wong for Urban Travel Collaboration

Could you tell us some background info about you, where are you from, which uni you went to etc?

I’m originally from York; I studied Fashion Design in college and went on to study fashion at Edinburgh Unversity. I graduated in 2010 and got some work experience in the industry interning for Gareth Pugh and Giles. It was a great experience and although I enjoyed it, I always wanted to have my own business and have since worked on my label.

What made you decide that you wanted to be a designer?

I come from a creative family and my aunt was into fashion as well – I think this had quite a big influence on me. When I made the decision to go to college, it was an instant thought that I was going to be in the creative industry. If it wasn’t fashion it was going to be something artsy. My intention was actually to be a costume designer one day because I really liked the idea of designing for films! I guess that’s still a possibility.

Where do you get your inspiration?

Usually I’m inspired by theory and anything that’s quite conceptual. Something you can’t quite put your finger on; it really gets me thinking, because sometimes when you can’t quite understand a concept or why things work the way they do, you’ve really got to research it. I normally translate these conceptual ideas, by firstly working with the fabric on the stand rather than putting pen to paper. I can really get my creative instinct on by draping with the fabric.

How did you meet Sai?

It was a chance meeting; we both took part in a designer pop-up shop at Westfield in London. We just happened to be there at the same time, got chatting and kept in touch!

What made you want to work with her?

Her brand is quite luxury but it’s got this kind of edge to it, its quite similar to my brand in some respects. When she came to me with the idea of a collaboration I really couldn’t turn it down. It was something that I always wanted to do – I have designed bags in the past but never actually produced any! As a womenswear designer it’s important to be able to accessorise an outfit and bags play such a major part in really completing a collection

What did you enjoy most about the collaboration?

Working with Sai! She’s really great and really dedicated. She knows exactly what she’s doing. The best thing about a collaboration is when you both have similar ideas, and the same amount of input in a project. We are very much on the same wave length! There have been a few times when it comes to designing and decision making where we have had the exact same ideas which has made the process so much easier.

What was your contribution to the collection? E.g. colour, design.

So I did the initial research and produced a selection of design ideas. I designed the final collection and created the specs for sampling. The colour choices, Sai actually came up with. I looked at those and produced a few colour combinations. She had a lot of input as well in terms of narrowing down the final collection and overlooking the sample production. She also made the decisions on the fine-tuning of the designs, which really helped for the details, finishing and construction techniques. I think we both had equal amounts of partnership in the project.

What do you think is the future of the collaboration? Will there be one?

I hope so; I’d love to do a collaboration again but maybe Sai can design for me one day?! There were originally a few more designs in our collection but for now we’re focusing on three main styles. They are quite versatile and trans-seasonal so we can potentially bring out more colours in the future, there’s still scope for a bigger collection.

What’s your favourite piece from the collection?

Ooo, I think it’s the backpack, it’s a bit different, the clutch bag and the tote bag are kind of your everyday essentials. But the backpack is a bit more of a statement piece. I’ve always wanted a leather backpack so I guess I don’t have an excuse not to have one now!
