and recrea tion have been suspended though visiting privileges have continued said authorities at the walled insti tution here where nine guards and one inmate were injured in an upris ing April 18 According to Rufus leming assistant warden for operations of ficials are seeking more information about the bloody confrontation and also are soliciting opinions about prison operating procedures and policies Officials at the peniten tiary hope to replace some of the frustration and violence there with communication During the past week orison staff members have interviewed about two thirds of the weapons similar to those used to attack guards in the April 18 disturbance finding stuff every leming said 1 Inmates have been confined largely to their cellblocks since the riot in which armed convicts bent on taking hostages and blocking the execution of James Briley jumped officers in a prison building execution went off without further violence that evening Edward Murray deputy direc tor of the prison 42 adult institutions said mass interviewing is not new at the penitentiary though high tension at the prison makes it imperative that officials attempt to address any festering grievances He noted that the slang term for lower ranking offi cers who walk the tiers and have the most contact with inmates also will be questioned about the outbreak of violence at the prison
